The palace was built in 1592 by Sir George Bruce, the laird of Carnock. Bruce made his fortune in trade with ports on the River Forth, the low countries and in the Baltic. Some of the materials for the palace were obtained in these foreign places. The palace is in the care of the National Trust for Scotland who have also restored the garden to how it would have been in the 17th century.
