The Darnley Sycamore, Darnley
Legend has it Mary Queen of Scots sat under this tree when staying nearby at Crookston Castle in 1565. However, tests have shown the tree only to be 200 years old, but who's to say it didn't replace an older tree? My family called this "Mr Mclean's" tree. Mr McLean was a Barrhead primary school teacher who took his class to stand and protest at tree when it was threatended with destruction by re-alignment of the road behind. He won, apparantly his Grandfather did the same when the tram line was built.
