Set up in the 1870's by William Quarrier , a succesfull shoe retailer as a childrens orphanage. Over 20 years it developed into a community of 40 individual childrens homes, a school, church, fire station, workshops and other facilities. It was used for this purpose until the 1980s but today the homes and other buildings have been made into private houses and flats.
