Opened in 1971 as a toll bridge it is of the cable stayed box girder design. The main span is 524m with a hieght over the river of 60m. An oil rig famously hit the structure in 1996 causing £3.6m of damage, on another occassion the operators 'forgot' to renew the toll licence thus allowing free crossings for a period of several weeks.
