Built in 1942 by J Hays & Sons of Kirkintilloch. Spartan is one of only two surviving Scottish built "Clyde Puffers". Spartan was built for the Navy as a "Victualling Inshore Craft" to service Navy vessels and sites on the west coast. She was then named VIC 18. The design has a flat bottom which makes it ideal for taking small cargos around the west coast where it could beach at high tide and off load cargo at low tide at places where was no pier.
