The Longhope Lifeboat, Scottish Maritime Museum, Irvine
Built in 1962 this twin screw motor lifeboat was built to hold up 95 people. Despite being a resilient vessels these Watson Class boats were not designed to self-right. This flaw led to one of the worst tragedies in the history of the RNLI when in March 1969 the TGB was called out to a freighter struggling in 60ft waves. The lifeboat, based in Longhope, Orkney, capsized on its way to help with the loss of all 8 crew members. The boat was salvaged and continued to be used in County Donegal until 1979.
