The "Scotch" Boiler from P.S. Waverley. Scottish Maritime Museum
The original double-ended Scotch boiler from PS Waverley. Manufactured by Rankin & Blackmore of Greenock and installed in 1947 when the vessel was built. The Scotch boiler was almost universally used during the "golden age" of steam propulsion and was an innovation developed on the Clyde by James Howden. Double ended means that it has furnaces at both ends which meet the combustion chamber in the middle.
