HMS Ark Royal, Portsmouth 1991

Launched at Swan Hunter on the Tyne in 1981 she was the last of the three Invincible Class Light Aircraft Carriers. The intention had been to name her Indomitable in line with the Royal Navy tradition of naming all ships in a class with a name starting with the same letter. However, public outcry at the scrapping of the larger HMS Ark Royal (R09) in 1979 led to this ship being called Ark Royal. Map location.
