Rear view of Caldwell House

In 1920 the house was sold to Glasgow Corporation and it became a hospital for mentally handicapped children until it became to costly to run in 1985. The external fire escapes are a legacy of its life as a hospital along with the building on the left with the Chimney which was a boiler house. Other newer buildings also existed at the rear but have been gutted by fire. Someone lived in one of these buildings until as recently as 1999.

What a tragic view of history! I had come here to staywith my sister and family during april/may 1998. The rubble in foreground (right) is the old schoolhouse they were living in. I wandered thru the the place and found an old playground, all overgrown forgotten, where children once did play.I cried then, and do so today,as this once glorious estate, decays into mists of time Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad
