Dounreay Fast Reactor, Caithness
The iconic dome of the fast reactor. It was built between 1955 and 1958 to test the concept of the fast breeder reactor.  It became the first fast reactor in the world to provide electricity to the grid in 1962, generating 14MW of electricity.  The reactor was closed in 1977 and is undergoing the long process of decommissioning which will eventually lead to the removal of the sphere.
