Sanquhar Castle
The ruins of Sanquhar Castle date from the 13th century and was built by the Crichton Family. In the mid 17th century it was sold to Sir William Douglas, but he was more interested in his main residence, Drumlanrig Castle. Sanquhar Castle fell in to disrepair until 1895 when John Crichton-Stuart (Johnny Bute) bought it. He attempted a restoration but this was abandoned following his death in 1900.
