Carved in the early 8th century at a time when Ruthwell lay within the Kingdom of Northumbria. It was a symbol of power of the Church of Rome in an area where the Celtic Church had previously been dominant. Today the cross stands inside the Parish Church at Ruthwell, in 1833 the Rev Henry Duncan did the first accurate drawings of the cross and translated the runic inscriptions which confirmed its remarkable survival.
